Caltech Dedicates Hameetman Center, New Campus Hub for Entire Community
The Caltech community formally dedicated the long-awaited Hameetman Center on Thursday, February 28.
Located at the heart of the campus, the new building offers a welcoming space for formal and informal gatherings of Caltech students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the Pasadena community. The center is named in honor of a lead donation from trustee Fred Hameetman (BS '62) and his wife, Joyce, both members of the Caltech Associates. Features include a large public lounge, an expanded Red Door Marketplace, the Caltech Store, student-club rooms, a multipurpose room, and a conference room.
The facility also houses a state-of-the-art rehearsal hall, funded by Steven Frautschi, emeritus professor of theoretical physics, and his wife, Mie. This is the first space on campus created specifically for Caltech's musical groups.
Built on the grounds of the former Winnett Student Center, the Hameetman Center was designed to forge connections through musical collaborations, art exhibits, conversations over coffee, and group meetings.
"I am looking forward to having a place to congregate and make connections outside of our labs, across our divisions, and even beyond the graduate student community," said graduate student Alistair Hayden in remarks at the dedication. "It will be a way to nurture friendships with people who have diverse perspectives."
If we can get these constituencies of genius together, sharing coffee, having a pizza, sharing ideas, magic will happen.
