Caltech Center for Comparative Planetary Evolution

Clues about how stars, planets, and even life itself originated are all around us, just waiting to be revealed. But groundbreaking discoveries often require creative perspectives, which is why the Caltech Center for Comparative Planetary Evolution (3CPE) unites astronomers, geologists, planetary scientists, and others in one shared mission to understand what different planets can tell us about the evolution of the cosmos.

For more than 100 years, our researchers have been a leading force in planetary exploration.

They have probed deep within the earth to unlock the dynamics of plate tectonics, helped build the robots currently traversing Mars, and illuminated how planets evolve from chemical, biological, and physical standpoints. 3CPE builds on these strengths and deepens cross-disciplinary research at Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (which Caltech manages for NASA) by combining numerous fields to build unexpected connections and push discovery into entirely new realms.

Join us as we pioneer new and unlikely interdisciplinary collaborations that could revolutionize how we think about our planet, the vast diversity of celestial bodies that surround us, and our place in the universe.
